Questions to Consider Before Starting a New Web Project

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Just how much time should you spend planning your web project prior to diving in head first?  Typically, most businesses spend many weeks or even months in the planning phases prior to a new web project but some tend to take a “fly by the seat of your pants” approach and go out on a limb, designing and planning the project as they go.  Regardless of how you plan, there are some questions that you should definitely consider before starting a new web project to assure that you are prepared for what’s to come.

What’s the Purpose of the Project?

First things first, ask yourself or your team what the purpose of the project is.  Make sure that the business objectives of the project are clearly outlined prior to getting started.  This will help you to more appropriately plan the project and will also assure that the long term goals of the project are properly aligned from start to finish.

What must be done prior to launching the project and who’s going to drive the project?

Somebody has to own the project in order to assure that it is appropriately managed and that essential features are implemented prior to launch.  For instance, if the web project is a landing page for a new product then it’s likely that the marketing department is the driving force behind the project and therefore the essential features are likely to include items related more so to marketing than to other areas of the company such as product development or IT.

What is the budget for the web project?

Although it’s not always the first question, it’s certainly one of the most important questions, “what is the budget for the project?”  This question often determines every other aspect of the project from development to launch so it’s vital that a budget is established prior to starting any web project.  It’s also important that the budget is a realistic approach to the project.
